In both skeletal and smooth muscle a rise in Ca2+ levels in the cytoplasm triggers contraction, but the mechanism of Ca2+ release and the induction of contraction is different. Explain why these differences are adaptive in terms of the different roles carried out by skeletal and smooth muscle.
