1. How does labelling affect the lives of mental health clients? (Refer to the article attached by Jeff Grabmeier) (200 words)
Labelling patients suffering from mental health issues is stigmatizing and may worsen the degree of seriousness of the disorder de to increased stress and possible depression due to isolation (Fox et al., 2021). Awareness of how the language used in conversations and interaction with mental health patients affect their mood and recovery process helps in reducing the possibility of a negative outcome. You either have a mental health issue or you don’t and are in good health. Labelling should be avoided as it creates a false impression as to what is normal r abnormal in the society. The move makes it challenging for the diagnosis and treatment of mental and psychological issues as all are classified as unique and easily curable eve in situations where they are not.

Depending on how you phrase a statement to refer to individuals suffering from mental health disorders, one may come off as rude and stigmatizing or knowledgeable and caring. Grabmeier (2016), advices that the best approach to referring to such patients is by starting with referring to the person first then including the situation one is in. comparing between two approaches to the use of language in healthcare situation, he argues that it is better to say “people with a mental illness” rather than “the mentally ill”. The former shows that the individuals are not defined by their health condition while using the latter defines an individual wholly by their health situation.

Language used when discussing mental health and people suffering from mental health issues directly impacts and influences on the relationships they have and also the quality of life experienced. Social exclusion involves the discrimination of an individual with mental health diseases, where, one is treated badly or harshly due to the fact they are viewed as different and suffer (Rogers & Pilgrim, 2014). Stigmatization of mentally ill individual involves alienating the and seeing them as different due to the medical conditions they might be going through.
Social exclusion focuses on the isolation of personas with a mental illness and how it impacts on their treatment and recovery process. It differs from stigmatization in that stigma can only be addressed from a medical point of view where information on how normal or abnormal one is gets passed, while, exclusion is addressed from a social point of view where people within the patient’ environment are encouraged to adopt a positive vali language.
4. What can be done to decrease stigma in mental health? (Refer to the Canadian Mental Health Commission website) (100 words)
Improving on mental health literacy in the population, evaluating existing anti-stigma programs, understanding the degree of stigma in healthcare and working to eradicate poor labelling n workplaces are measures the commission ha actively engaged in to reduce and possibly eradicate the stigma that comes with mental health disorders.
